The purpose of
this seminar is to provide some review and discussion of theory and research in
current language learning and teaching and their implications for Chinese language
instruction. Topics will cover theoretical perspectives on first and second language
acquisition, major approaches and methods in foreign
language pedagogy, issues and techniques in teaching various linguistic
components. In addition, it will touch upon particular topics such as cultural differences,
contrastive analysis, error analysis, and error correction in relationship to
Chinese language instruction.
Course Requirements and Evaluation
Students are
expected to critically read book chapters and several articles each week in
preparation for class discussion. In addition, there will be an instructional
material review, a synthesis paper or observation report, a teaching
demonstration, and a final project.
