這門課程主要研究以中文為第二語言的學習者之中文系統，並分析此一中介語系統形成及發展的相關因素，包括來自學習者語言知識的影響（包括已知語、目的語、普遍語法）、文化的影響以及個人學習心理因素的影響等。透過實際分析以中文為第二語言之學習者的中文語料，學生可觀察出特定語言背景學習者的中介語系統現象，進而探索語言習得的規律。相關的訓練包括：對比分析、錯誤分析、中介語分析及第二語言習得。本課程的目標在訓練學生對於華語為第二語言的中介語系統進行較深入的分析，並體認到中介語的多樣性及其在教學和研究上所造成的困難，因此，華語教學需不斷嘗試了解學生中介語所要表達的意義，並尊重其為個人知識所歸納出的系統，逐步引導學生向目的語的系統靠攏。
