1. INTRODUCTION
Happy (Belated!) Chinese New Year!
First off - I'd like to extend a warm welcome to the 36 or so new
members that have joined the MTCAA in recent months and in particular
welcome some new city contacts for Alumni--Alain Fontaine alain@formose.net
is our France contact who is working to bring more alumni from France
together, and Irwin Tjiong hitjiong@yahoo.com,
formerly the contact for Amsterdam, is now an important San Francisco
contact. We'd also like to welcome our first member from India, the
27th country represented by MTC Alumni -- Sanjay Bhatt.
Special thanks
to Ross Feingold and Lynn Lee for their valuable work in initiating
contact with the ROC Ministry of Education to help develop the organization
even further. We'd like to hear what fellow alumni are up to (check
our member's comments section below), so drop us a line at mtcalumni@bigfoot.com
and tell us about what you or a fellow alumni are up to. It's sometimes
easier for someone else to drop us a line!
We look forward to further strengthening our alumni base in Taipei. If you
have ideas to help do so, please contact Ross at rfeingold@hotmail.com.
2. MEETING WITH DR. LI
On December 22, 2000, MTC Alumni Ross Feingold ('97) and Lynn Lee
('97) had a meeting with Director-General Chen-ching Li of the Bureau of
International Cultural and Educational Relations under the Ministry of
Education. Older alumni will remember Dr. Li as the former director of the
Mandarin Training Center between 1980 and 1989. Dr. Li was very enthusiastic
about the alumni association and pledged to support its endeavors as much as
possible. He also had many suggestions and ideas with regard to expanding
the association even further.
3. SLOGAN CONTEST (http://th.gio.gov.tw/slogan)
Hey, everyone here loves Taiwan, right? Whether you're hoping for eventual
reunification between the ROC and the PRC or you're an advocate for Taiwan
independence, something about the little island drew you to Taiwan to study
Chinese as opposed to going to the Mainland! SO, would you like a chance
to come back to Taiwan for a short vacation...? 'Cause the ROC Government
Information Office (GIO) is offering cash prizes ranging from US$2,000 to
US$500, roundtrip air tickets to Taipei with free five-star hotel
accommodations, an Asustek Pentium III notebook computer, plus 30
runners-up prizes, for pithy, original, and highly memorable slogans that
can be used to boost global awareness of Taiwan's special achievements and
unique international situation. There are four different slogan contests
that you can enter, and each slogan only has to be twenty words (or less)!
Take a stab at it and have a chance at winning a trip back to Ilha Formosa!
Contest rules can be found at the GIO website at
http://th.gio.gov.tw/slogan. Entries must be received by the end of
February, so enter now!

5. MEMBERS' COMMENTS
If you have a tidbit you'd like to share about an MTC/CLCC alumni you may
know or have recently run into, please drop us a line at mtcalumni@bigfoot.com
(we're still waiting to receive comments in Chinese)!
- 1978 Tracy Van Buskirk
"I am a part time financial consultant and part time polymer clay artist. I
used to be Tracy Smith back when I went to the MTC many many years ago. I
just went back to Taipei after 22 yrs for a visit and was kind of amazed at the
changes. But happily I remembered a lot of my Chinese...."
- 1986 Neal Woodcock
"In my working life I help management consultants communicate more
effectively with their clients. I do this through training and hands-on help. In my
spare time I enjoy going to the gym, writing and painting."
- 1987 Alain Fontaine France, Noisiel (Paris)
"Can the alumni association help locate teachers? I would be very glad to
find my two teachers, Ms Hsieh and Mr. Liu who were both in their thirties when I
was their student."
- 1987 Andrew Gordon
"My Chinese name is Guo AnYong. I have been in computer consulting for 10
years and would like to brush up on my Chinese. I remember very fondly my
year at MTC, especially my teachers and classmates."
- 1993 Bradley Altemeyer
"Hello all - hope you are still wild and crazy. I'm living on (near) the
border with Mexico, so now I'm learning Spanish. Teaching college business and
computer classes at STCC.cc.tx.us, first community college
with an E-Commerce program."
- 1995 Eric Valles

- 1997 William Shaw
"This is a great site. I wish I could locate more friends when I was at the
MTC (1995-1997). Interesting tidbit: for those still at the MTC, try taking a
shower or playing ping pong in the first-class facilities on top of the
roof. Not only a great view, but you can bare your buns to Shi Da and all of
Taipei!"
- 1999 Alex Fang
"Whoever you are, whatever you do, if you're from MTC, then drop me an
email, won't you?"

8. MTCAA OFFICIAL WEBSITE
The Center for Chinese Language and Culture (as the MTC is now officially
known) has finally gotten its own
webserver! As a result, you can now go the CCLC's homepage by pointing
your browser directly at http://mtc.ntnu.edu.tw. Consequently, the URL to
our site has been shortened to http://mtc.ntnu.edu.tw/mtcaa!
Also, NBCi has bought up Xoom.com, so our mirror website in the US has
changed addresses to http://members.nbci.com/mtcaa.
However, if you don't want to change your bookmarks, you can still access
either site through the longer, http://www.ntnu.edu.tw/mtc/mtcaa/ link or
the old http://members.xoom.com/mtcaa.
Both should still work fine!
Now if only the CCLC would register its own domain name... ;-)
