教學目標

The goal of this course is to provide students with a reasonably compact introduction to the study and appreciation of Gothic literature. The selected American Gothic tales will be studied in terms of basic aesthetic elements and Gothic elements to enhance students’ meaningful reading of Gothic literature and to heighten their sensibility and appreciation of the Gothic as a genre and as an expression of unique social, political, and cultural conditions and of psychological complexity. Gothic conventions, terminology, and critical approaches to Gothic literature will also be introduced in this course.

本課程希望透過閱讀一系列美國恐怖短篇故事,帶領同學認識迷人又深邃的恐怖文學以及此文類所反映的複雜人類社會狀態。除了介紹恐怖文學中的基本美學元素,並探討恐怖文學背後所牽涉的複雜的政治、宗教、種族、階級、與性別等與社會、歷史與文化攸關的面向。此外也將探討恐怖文類中所呈現的如恐懼、仇恨、焦慮等涉及主體心理狀態的議題。

實施方式

1.每週討論一位作家的一篇作品,同學必須在課前讀過作品.課堂帶讀主要以英文進行,並以中文處理太過抽象的觀念.
2.本課程將包含期中與期末考, 期末要繳交一篇報告.
3.每週必須書寫閱讀筆記.筆記內容以申論題形式回答兩個與作品相關的題目,筆記中另可書寫與作品或作者相關的想法.
4.評量方式: 出席與課堂討論 40%; 期中與期末考試 30%; 作業 30%.
